First Day of Kindergarten

The First Day
I gave you a little wink and smile
As you entered my room today.
For I know how hard it is to leave
And know your child must stay.
You've been with him for five six years now
And have been a loving guide,
But now, alas, the time has come
To leave him at my side.
Just know that as you drive away
And tears down your cheeks may flow
I'll love him as I would my own
And help him learn and grow.
For as a parent, I too know
How quickly the years do pass
As I remember the day it was my turn
To take my child to class.
So please put your mind at ease
And cry those tears no more
For I will love him and take him in
When you leave him at my door.

The teacher handed me this poem as we dropped him off at her door.  I had choked back tears already and then almost did the ugly cry reading it in the van.  I didn't have time to cry, we were off to Annika's 2 week check up!  I made cookies as a special first day of school snack.

The little boy sitting across from Sage we "met" at meet the teacher.  I asked his name and he said "I don't talk very much.  I do tai kwon do.  I defend myself."  And that was that.
Because my sister asked nicely.  And she's really cute.  No, I don't know who she looks like.

  4. Loved it all! Tears here too.... Thanks for sharing - takes me back when you were the baby; Mindy and Brad were off to school and Eric stayed to watch over you! Precious memories to say the least! Like Annika, you grew up in car pool!

    Love and prayers,

  6. okay, this is the post i've been waiting for!
    so much to say (shocker).
    1) i used to give my kindergarten parents an excerpt from that poem. i thought about it last year and felt the need to apologize to every one of them now that i'm a mom and realized how it would have made me bawl.
    2) the picture of all four of them on the bench melts me.
    3) sage's first day of school outfit is perfect.
    4) so is your all-important dropping your child off for the first day of school outfit.
    5) i love your family of six and this sweet milestone!

  8. I love this post! Especially the pictures, but even the poem, since today is Chase's first day of kindergarten. We met his teacher the other night. I will put him on the bus this morning and have 9 hours of an empty house (except for Glen) before they get home! I'm crying just thinking about it. Thank you for the picture of Annika. :)

  10. She's gorgeous, Kristy!! I'm not surprised. :) And that poem is beautiful. I love it. Austin's teacher wrote "I love you" on a postcard to him (and it's also written on the folder he takes home each day). At first I thought it was a little...odd? But then I appreciate it, especially when Austin said "she LOVES me". It really touched him. It's hard to believe our sweet boys (most of the time) are kindergarteners!
